Since we opened our doors, the people of Nanaimo, through their churches, businesses, service clubs and individually as donors and volunteers, have generously contributed time, energy, financial support, donations and vision to help feed those in need. The sharing and caring of Loaves & Fishes Food Bank got its start in the charity work of the people of St. Paul's Anglican Church and Archdeacon David McKay.
The work to create the independent charity of the Loaves & Fishes Food Bank Foundation was begun by Mr. Bill Purdy and Rev. Dawn Braithwaite in 1996. In late 1998 we moved into our present facilities, where God's unconditional love and presence continues to be experienced in wonderful ways. In 2008 we established a Satellite facility at Brechin United Church on Estevan Road which has relieved the pressure on the Farquhar facility. Brechin Church now serves 25% of our monthly clients. Through community support, Loaves and Fishes Food Bank opened three new food bank depots in September 2009. Volunteers at St.Paul's Lutheran Church in Harewood, St.Andrew's Presbyterian Church on Departure Bay Rd, and Christ Community Church on Bowen Rd., help clients access the food bank in their neighbourhoods. This was a big step forward in the delivery of our service to people in need. Loaves and Fishes Food Bank statistics, displayed on a graph, indicates the number of people visiting the food bank every month.
